Test Your Car's Battery Like a Professional

The battery in your car may be showing signs of weakness. Don't leave on an adventure without knowing if your battery can keep up! Here is how to accurately test the car battery like the professionals at Gordie Boucher Mazda of Janesville.

Turn off the lights and the ignition of the car first, then open the hood and find the battery compartment. The terminals need to be clear of corrosion, and if not, a wire brush will clear the obstruction. To get the most accurate reading, we are going to use a simple voltmeter. The voltmeter has two wires. Touch the red wire to the positive terminal of the car battery. The black wire will then go to the negative side of your battery.

The reading will be 12.4 or higher if the car battery is holding a strong charge, and under 12.2 if there are some issues with charging and power. If you don't feel confident testing your car battery, come over to our auto parts facility and one of our technicians will perform testing today!
